Don't Play Chicken with an 18-Wheeler – You Will Lose

On average, a tractor trailer can weigh anywhere from 12,100 pounds to 80,000 pounds, with some trucks operating at an overload capacity (over 80,000 pounds). Below are some safety tips to avoid these accidents.

Pay attention. This safety tip will help you avoid various types of motor vehicle accidents, not just ones involving 18-wheelers. Treat big rigs differently than you would cars, pick-up trucks, or SUVs. Leave sufficient space between a big rig and your car, whether you are in front of or following the truck. This will allow the truck to have the proper space needed to safely stop.

Stay out of truck drivers' blind spots. It is important to stay visible and anticipate the low visibility of the truck driver. Remember, semi trucks have large blind spots, with limited visibility next to and behind them. Adverse weather conditions, including rain, ice, and fog, can further affect the truck's ability to stop and to maneuver. For example, it may be difficult for a truck driver to easily maneuver the tight curves of a mountain road.

Avoid road rage. Some truck drivers may drive aggressively, but trying to retaliate (like by braking suddenly when being tailgated by an 18-wheeler) could have disastrous repercussions. If possible, you should report aggressive truck drivers.

Hopefully using the above tips, you will be able to avoid getting into a big-rig accident. If an accident is unavoidable and you do get into a collision with an 18-wheeler, speak with a personal injury lawyer with experience in litigation involving trucking accidents.
